October 15, 2009: In the Hall of Protomoteca at Capitoline Hill presenting the volume, “Pasquale Testini. Scritti di archeologia cristiana. Le immagini, I luoghi, I contesti”, published by the Sovraintendenza for the Cultural Heritage of the City of Rome and the Pontifical Institute of Christian Archaeology in celebration of the 20th anniversary of the death of the scholar. After the introduction by Umberto Broccoli, speeches were given by Vincenzo Fiocchi Nicolai, Carlo Carletti and Lucrezia Ungaro.

May 22, 2009: P. Robert Godding (Société des Bollandistes) held a conference on "I Dialoghi di Gregorio Magno opera di un falsario? Una controversia ideologica”.


25 April 2009: Study trip to Sardinia.

April 1, 2009: A study day was held at the Institute on Il Complesso di San Paolo fuori le mura. Profilo dell’insediamento attraverso le indagini 2007-2008 nell’orto dell’Abbazia”, coordinated by Prof. Spera.
In the meeting, introduced by the Director of the Vatican Museums Prof. Antonio Paolucci and the Rector of the Institute Prof. Fiocchi Nicolai, were presented the results of excavations conducted by the Institute, in collaboration with the Vatican Museums, in the south of the Basilica of St. Paul.
Speakers included: Ch Wickham, F. Moscarini, I. De Grossi Mazzorin, N. Camerlenghi, U. Utro, L. Di Blasi, M. Ricciardi, I. Gradante, R. Ciaffi, A. Appetecchia, C. Palombi, C. Proverbio, F. Vinci, C. De Santis, E. Fresi, M. Patti.

February 2009: Discussion of the doctoral thesis of Dr. Simona Petrelli: "I musei diocesani delle Marche".

December 20, 2008: Pope Benedict XVI receives professors, students, and employees of the PIAC in the Sala Clementina of the Apostolic Palace in Vatican.

October 2008: Stratigraphic analysis of masonry and study of the phases of the Lateran Baptistery, under the direction of Prof. Federico Guidobaldi and Dr. Olof Brandt, in collaboration with the Vatican Museums and the Swedish Institute of Classical Studies in Rome, with the participation of students from the Institute.


November 2007 – June 2008: Excavation in the monastic garden of St. Paul Outside the Walls in collaboration with the Vatican Museums.

June 13, 2008: Celebration of the end of the academic year on the terrace of the Institute after the final exams.


March 31 -2 April 2008: Study trip to Naples and Ischia.
The Institute’s annual study trip brought thirty-seven students and doctoral students, seven professors, the secretary, and the librarian to Naples. There they saw the Duomo, the churches of S. S. Lorenzo Maggiore  and Giorgio Maggiore, and the catacombs of S. Gennaro. In Ischia, they visited the excavations of S. Restituta in Lacco Ameno.

December 14, 2007: Discussion of the doctoral thesis of Dr. Claudia Angelelli:
"Santa Pudenziana.. Il tessuto urbano preesistente, il titulus e l'evoluzione della struttura e della topografia”.

November 5, 2007: Opening of the academic year.

New Rector
On September 25, 2007, the Congregation for Catholic Education appointed Prof. Vincenzo Fiocchi Nicolai  as Rector ‘ad triennium’.
